Working Remotely at UP

UP Faculty and Staff can work remotely using personal devices. This article is a guide to the resources available to UP Faculty and Staff when working remotely, such as Virtual Machines, Virtual Private Network connections, Microsoft 365, and more.

Resources

Virtual Machines (VM)

Employees who need to use applications that are only available on campus can access them remotely by using a Virtual Machine. You can access a virtual machine by going to dektop.up.edu in a web browser, and following the instructions in this article.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

If you want to work on your computer rather than on a Virtual Machine, but still need to use campus-only applications, you can use our Cisco Secure VPN to access the campus network. You can access Cisco Secure VPN by following the instructions in this article

Microsoft 365

You can use Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint on your personal device by logging in with your UP account. For more information about installing and using Microsoft 365, see this article.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Employees can use Adobe Acrobat Pro to edit and sign .PDF documents. For more information about using Adobe Acrobat Pro's Fill and Sign feature, see Adobe's tutorial article. If you do not have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro, contact the Help Desk.

Phones and Phone Forwarding

Employees can use Cisco Jabber to access their office phone line from a Virtual Machine by following the steps in this article. You can also forward Cisco office phones to personal phones by following the steps in this article before leaving campus, or by following the steps in this article from off campus.

MyApps

Employees can access UP applications such as Outlook, Self-Serve Banner, Microsoft 365 and more at myapps.up.edu.

Teams

Microsoft Teams is available to all UP employees as a team communication tool. Employees can access the web version of teams at myapps.up.edu, or download the desktop version from Microsoft's download page.

OneDrive and Network Drives

Employees can access their Network Drives (U and P Drives) from personal devices by following the instructions in this article, or by going to file.up.edu. You can also access your cloud storage in Microsoft OneDrive by going to myapps.up.edu and opening OneDrive.

Safety

It's important to keep sensitive information and devices safe when working off campus. Here are some important tips for keeping your work safe:

  1. Do not leave any devices unattended in your car, or in other vulnerable or public places.
  2. Use an anti-virus software like Microsoft Defender to keep your computer protected from viruses.
  3. Keep your operating system and applications like web browsers up to date for the latest protection.
  4. Don't connect to public wifi networks or networks that you don't know and trust.
  5. Encrypt your email messages by following the quick steps in this article.
  6. Don't store sensitive data on your device's memory. Instead, use safer cloud storage like OneDrive, or your network drives.
